The Disappearance of Tara Calico

UnsolvedSources: ALast updated: 14 October 2026

On the morning of 20 September 1988, 19-year-old college student Tara Calico left her home in Belen, New Mexico, for her daily bike ride of about 36 miles. Her own bike had a flat tyre, so she rode her mother's pink bicycle. She was last seen around 11:45 am on Highway 47, a couple of miles from home; witnesses said an old light-coloured pickup truck was following her. Only pieces of her broken Walkman were found by the road. Calico is believed to have been abducted, but no definitive trace of her fate has been found. The Valencia County Sheriff's Office and the FBI keep the case open.
