YEONGGWANG — 1994 · Serial Murder
The "Jijonpa" Gang Murders
In 1993 a group of seven men who met in Hampyeong County, South Jeolla, formed a gang later known as "Jijonpa", citing hatred of the rich. Between July 1993 and September 1994 the group killed five people, including one of its own members; most victims were ordinary people. The gang, which had turned the basement of a house in Yeonggwang into a cell, was broken up in September 1994 after a woman they had abducted escaped and reached police. The courts sentenced six members to death, and they were executed on 2 November 1995. The case was also debated in South Korea over police indifference to the first report and copycat gangs.
