CAPACI — 1992 · Murder
The Capaci Bombing
At 5:58 p.m. on 23 May 1992 the motorcade taking anti-Mafia judge Giovanni Falcone from Palermo airport into the city was blown up near Capaci by about 400 kilograms of explosives placed under the A29 motorway. Falcone, his wife Francesca Morvillo, also a judge, and three police bodyguards were killed; other officers survived with injuries. The attack was ordered by the Cosa Nostra leadership in retaliation for the convictions of the Maxi Trial. In 1997 a court in Caltanissetta sentenced numerous defendants, including Mafia bosses, to life imprisonment. Fifty-seven days later Falcone's colleague Paolo Borsellino was also killed by a bomb.
