The Disappearance of Tanja Groen
Tanja Groen, an 18-year-old student who had just started at Maastricht University, left a student society party during introduction week on the night of 31 August to 1 September 1993, cycling towards her room in Gronsveld. She never arrived. Neither she nor her bicycle and belongings were ever found. Police assumed a crime from the outset, but no concrete suspect was identified. Searches took place at a Maastricht cemetery in 2020 and on the Strabrechtse Heide near Geldrop in 2021, when a one-million-euro reward generated about a thousand tips. In May 2026, after 33 years, police and prosecutors closed the investigation without a result.
