Murder of Grace Millane
Grace Millane, a 22-year-old British woman on a round-the-world trip, met a man she had matched with on a dating app in Auckland on 1 December 2018 and was not heard from again. Her body was found on 9 December in the Waitākere Ranges west of the city. The accused claimed her death was an accident, but an Auckland High Court jury found him guilty of murder in November 2019. In February 2020 he was sentenced to life with a minimum of 17 years. His appeals were dismissed in 2020 and 2021. The case sparked significant public debate in New Zealand about violence against women and the airing of a victim's private life in court.
