Murder of Reeva Steenkamp
Model and law graduate Reeva Steenkamp was shot dead in the early hours of 14 February 2013 through a locked bathroom door at a gated estate in Pretoria by her boyfriend, Olympic and Paralympic athlete Oscar Pistorius. He said he had mistaken her for an intruder. After a trial followed worldwide, he was convicted of culpable homicide in September 2014 and sentenced to five years. The Supreme Court of Appeal changed the verdict to murder in December 2015, and the sentence was increased to 13 years and 5 months in 2017. Pistorius was paroled in January 2024. The case put violence against women in South Africa in the spotlight.
