The Gabby Petito Case

ClosedSources: ALast updated: 14 October 2026

In summer 2021, 22-year-old Gabby Petito set out on a van trip across the western U.S. with her fiancé. He returned alone in the van to their Florida home in early September, and Petito's family reported her missing on 11 September. Travel footage she had shared online made the case a national story. On 19 September 2021 her body was found at the Spread Creek camping area near Grand Teton National Park, Wyoming; the coroner ruled the death a homicide. Her fiancé was found dead in a Florida nature reserve in October 2021. In January 2022 the FBI closed its investigation, concluding he was responsible for her death. The case also fuelled debate about warning signs of domestic violence and unequal media attention to missing-person cases.
