ANKARA — 1978 · Murder
Balgat massacre
On the night of 10 August 1978, shots were fired from a stolen car at four coffeehouses in Ankara's Balgat neighbourhood, frequented mostly by left-wing people; five people died. Among the dead was the driver whose car had been seized and who had no political ties. The attackers were said to belong to an ultranationalist group. On 18 October 1979 two defendants were sentenced to death, and the Military Court of Cassation upheld the verdict on 16 July 1980. One of them was executed on 7 October 1980 after the 12 September coup.
