Bahçelievler massacre

SolvedSources: ALast updated: 14 October 2026

On 8 October 1978, seven university students who were members of the Workers' Party of Turkey were killed in a house in Bahçelievler, Ankara. It became one of the best-known massacres of the political violence of the late 1970s. The perpetrators belonged to an ultranationalist group; the trial continued after 1980, and in 1986 verdicts including death sentences were handed down. Death sentences for defendants caught later were upheld by the Court of Cassation in 2001 and converted to prison terms through legal changes. The case remained in the news for years because of the defendants' releases.
