LONDON — 1910 · Murder
Dr. Crippen case
In 1910 in London, a doctor named Hawley Harvey Crippen was linked to human remains found in the basement of his home after his wife's disappearance. While fleeing to Canada with his mistress, he was caught after the ship's captain alerted the authorities by wireless telegraph — regarded as the first case in history in which a suspect was caught via telegraph. The trial resulted in a death sentence, which was carried out. A DNA analysis conducted in 2009 opened new debate over whether the remains found truly belonged to his wife.
