NORTH ATLANTIC — 1912 · Major Tragedy
The Sinking of the Titanic
RMS Titanic, the largest passenger ship of its day, struck an iceberg in the North Atlantic at about 11:40 pm on 14 April 1912, during its maiden voyage from Southampton to New York. The ship sank about two hours and forty minutes later, at 2:20 am on 15 April. More than 1,500 of the roughly 2,200 people aboard died; the lifeboats could not hold everyone. Inquiries followed in the US and Britain, and the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS), signed in 1914, made lifeboat space for all and a round-the-clock radio watch mandatory. The wreck was found on 1 September 1985, about 3,800 metres down, south-east of Newfoundland.
