Port Arthur, Tasmania, Australia (urban legend)

The Ghosts of Port Arthur

Folklore — not a documented case

In the stone buildings of Tasmania's former convict prison, the spirits of convicts and guards who lived here long ago are said to roam.

Port Arthur is a former convict settlement on the Tasman Peninsula in south-eastern Tasmania. Founded in 1830 as a timber camp, it soon became one of the harshest penal institutions in the British Empire. Repeat offenders were sent here and put to hard labour. Escape was almost impossible; the narrow isthmus linking the peninsula to the mainland was guarded by dogs.
