Dakuwaqa: The Shark God of Fiji
Folklore — not a documented case
In Fijian belief, the shark god Dakuwaqa was defeated by an octopus goddess in the waters of Kadavu Island and has since promised to protect its fishermen.
The Fiji archipelago consists of more than 300 islands in the South Pacific. Sea gods hold an important place in the traditional beliefs of the Fijian people, who live closely with the ocean. The most famous of them is the shark god Dakuwaqa, said to appear as a shark or sometimes as a man with a shark's head.
