Imam Ja'far al-Sadiq Mosque Bombing

SolvedSources: ALast updated: 14 October 2026

On 26 June 2015, during the first Friday prayers of Ramadan, a suicide bomber blew himself up at the Imam Ja'far al-Sadiq Mosque in the As-Sawabir district of Kuwait City. Twenty-seven people were killed and 227 wounded, making it the deadliest attack in Kuwait's history. ISIL claimed responsibility. Attacks also took place the same day in Tunisia and France. Kuwaiti authorities said the bomber was a Saudi national who had entered the country shortly before the attack. Cross-sectarian solidarity was emphasised afterwards, and the emir visited the scene. In September 2015 a court convicted 15 people linked to the attack and sentenced seven to death, including some tried in absentia.
