On 21 March 2019 an overcrowded ferry taking families to a leisure island on the Tigris to celebrate Nowruz and Mother's Day capsized near Mosul. The boat, with a capacity of about 50, was carrying nearly 200 people, and the river was running high. More than 100 people died, most of them women and children. Angry crowds confronted officials at the scene. At the prime minister's request, Iraq's parliament dismissed the governor of Nineveh and his two deputies on 24 March, and arrest warrants were issued for the ferry operators.
