Murder of Michaela McAreavey
Michaela McAreavey, a 27-year-old teacher and the daughter of Irish Gaelic football manager Mickey Harte, was found dead in her room at a Mauritius hotel where she was on honeymoon on 10 January 2011. It was believed she had surprised people in the room when she returned to fetch biscuits for tea. Two hotel workers were tried in Mauritius in 2012, and on 12 July 2012 the jury acquitted both. A new investigation team was set up the same year; the case has resurfaced over the years with various developments, and a key witness died in 2021. The family continues to seek justice, and the murder remains officially unsolved.
