SolvedSources: ALast updated: 14 October 2026

Cihan Hayırsevener, owner and columnist of the Bandırma-based newspaper Güney Marmara'da Yaşam, was shot and killed in central Bandırma on 18 December 2009 after reporting on alleged financial irregularities involving the local administration and certain business circles. The investigation found that the killing involved not only a gunman but also an instigator and intermediaries. The trial of 22 defendants lasted about three and a half years. In August 2013 the court sentenced the gunman to life imprisonment and gave prison terms to the defendant found to have ordered the killing and to the intermediaries. The verdict was closely followed by press freedom organisations.
