ISTANBUL — 2007 · Murder
Death of Festus Okey at a police station
Nigerian footballer and asylum seeker Festus Okey was shot dead on 20 August 2007 at the Beyoğlu Police Station, where he had been taken into custody. Police initially put forward a different account, and the fact that cameras were not working and some evidence went missing drew criticism. The accused officer received 4 years and 2 months in 2011; the verdict was overturned. The Constitutional Court found a rights violation in early 2021, and on 17 March 2021 a retrial resulted in a 16-year-8-month sentence.
