TATÁRSZENTGYÖRGY — 2008 · Serial Murder
The Hungarian Roma Murders
Between July 2008 and August 2009, a series of shooting and arson attacks targeted the homes of Roma families in villages across Hungary. Six Roma people were killed and many were injured. The best-known attack took place in Tatárszentgyörgy in February 2009, when a father and his young son were killed. Police were sharply criticised for failing at first to link the attacks and to acknowledge the racist motive. Of a four-man far-right group arrested in August 2009, three were sentenced to life imprisonment in August 2013 and the fourth to 13 years. Hungary's Supreme Court upheld the sentences in 2016.
