ZUG — 2001 · Major Tragedy
The Zug Parliament Attack
On the morning of 27 September 2001 a 57-year-old man who had been locked in a long legal dispute with local authorities entered the cantonal parliament in Zug wearing a police-style vest and opened fire within minutes. Fourteen politicians were killed, including three members of the cantonal government, and 18 people were injured; the attacker then killed himself. His weapons had been obtained legally. It was the first killing of a Swiss politician since the 19th century. The attack led to access controls and security measures at public buildings across the country, and a memorial to the victims was unveiled in 2004.
