BARR — 1992 · Major Tragedy
Mont Sainte-Odile Air Crash
On the evening of 20 January 1992, Air Inter Flight 148, an Airbus A320 flying from Lyon to Strasbourg, struck a wooded ridge near Mont Sainte-Odile in the Vosges mountains during its approach. Of the 96 people on board, 87 died and 9 survived with injuries. The investigation found that the pilots may have selected the wrong descent mode on the autopilot and that the aircraft had no ground proximity warning system. Rescuers reached the wreckage only about four and a half hours later; some experts concluded that two victims might have survived with a faster response. At the 2006 trial all six defendants were acquitted, a decision upheld on appeal in 2008.
