FURIANI — 1992 · Major Tragedy
Furiani Stadium Disaster
On the evening of 5 May 1992, about seven minutes before the French Cup semi-final between SC Bastia and Olympique de Marseille at the Armand-Cesari stadium in Furiani, Corsica, the upper section of a temporary metal stand hastily erected to increase capacity collapsed. Eighteen people died and 2,357 were injured. The stand was found not to meet safety standards and to have been built without the required checks. The construction supervisor, a club executive, a technical inspection official and a prefecture official were convicted of involuntary manslaughter. A 2021 law banned professional football matches in France on 5 May.
