INVERKIP — 1999 · Missing Person
The Margaret Fleming case
In 1999, 19-year-old Margaret Fleming was last seen at the home of the two caregivers she lived with in Scotland. Her disappearance went unnoticed for years; her caregivers continued collecting state benefits in her name and claimed she was alive. The truth only came to light in 2016 during a social-services check. Her body was never found. In 2019, the court found both defendants guilty of murder and sentenced them to life imprisonment. The case led to a broad public inquiry into how vulnerable individuals can go unnoticed within the care system.
