BANTRY — 1979 · Major Tragedy
The Whiddy Island Disaster
In the early hours of 8 January 1979 the French-owned oil tanker Betelgeuse caught fire and exploded while discharging crude oil at the Gulf Oil terminal jetty on Whiddy Island in Bantry Bay. The explosion and fire killed 50 people, including all 42 French crew and local men working on the jetty; some bodies were never recovered. The official tribunal found that the ship's weakened hull had failed structurally during the discharge. For decades families sought answers about emergency preparedness at the terminal and about accountability.
