SAINT-LAMBERT — 1970 · Murder
The Kidnapping and Murder of Pierre Laporte
During the October Crisis, a cell of the FLQ, a group advocating Quebec independence by armed means, kidnapped Quebec's Deputy Premier and Labour Minister Pierre Laporte outside his home in Saint-Lambert on 10 October 1970. The abduction came five days after British diplomat James Cross was kidnapped. On 16 October the federal government invoked the War Measures Act for the first time in peacetime, and hundreds of people were detained without charge. Laporte's body was found in the trunk of a car near Saint-Hubert airport on 17 October. Cell members were captured in December; some were convicted of murder and others of taking part in the kidnapping. Cross was released in December.
