SASKATOON — 1969 · Murder
The Gail Miller case
In January 1969, 20-year-old nursing aide Gail Miller was attacked and killed on her way to work in Saskatoon, Canada. David Milgaard, then 16 years old, was named as a suspect in the investigation and was sentenced to life imprisonment in 1970. Milgaard consistently maintained his innocence, and his mother campaigned for decades to have the case reopened. In 1992, the Supreme Court of Canada quashed the conviction, and DNA analysis conducted in 1997 definitively cleared him. The same analysis pointed to the real perpetrator, who was apprehended and convicted in 1999. Milgaard had spent 23 years in prison and received compensation from the government. The case helped drive criminal-justice reform in Canada.
