RAWALPINDI — 1951 · Murder

Assassination of Liaquat Ali Khan

ClosedSources: ALast updated: 14 October 2026

Liaquat Ali Khan, Pakistan's first prime minister, was shot at close range on 16 October 1951 while addressing a crowd of around 100,000 in Company Bagh park, Rawalpindi, and died in hospital. The attacker, an Afghan national, was shot dead by police at the scene. Because he was killed, little could be learned about his background or motive. Theories have ranged from personal grievance to a domestic or foreign conspiracy, but none has been confirmed by conclusive evidence. The park was later renamed Liaquat Bagh; Benazir Bhutto was assassinated near the same park in 2007.
