The Georgiy Gongadze Case
Georgiy Gongadze, founder of the news site Ukrainska Pravda and a critic of the authorities, disappeared in Kyiv on 16 September 2000. A body found on 2 November 2000 in the Tarashcha forest, about 70 km south of Kyiv, was confirmed forensically to be his. Publication of secret recordings allegedly made in the president's office triggered a major political crisis and protests. Three former police officers were convicted in 2008, and in January 2013 a retired general who had headed the Interior Ministry's surveillance department was sentenced to life for the murder. Those who ordered the killing have never been brought to justice.
