The Assassination of Pavel Sheremet
Belarusian-born journalist Pavel Sheremet was killed on the morning of 20 July 2016 in central Kyiv when an explosive device placed under the car he was driving detonated. Sheremet worked for Ukrainska Pravda, one of Ukraine's leading news sites, and hosted a radio show. In December 2019 Ukrainian authorities detained five Donbas war veterans on suspicion of involvement, but in January 2020 the prosecutor-general admitted that the evidence gathered was not sufficient for trial. Journalists and press freedom groups questioned the consistency of the evidence and the alleged motive. With no final conviction, the case remains a landmark for press freedom in Ukraine.
