TIJUANA — 1994 · Murder
The Assassination of Luis Donaldo Colosio
Luis Donaldo Colosio, presidential candidate of Mexico's ruling PRI, was shot in the head in the crowd after a campaign rally in the Lomas Taurinas neighbourhood of Tijuana on 23 March 1994. A young factory worker arrested at the scene was tried and given a long prison sentence. But the debate over whether he acted alone or as part of a conspiracy never ended, and claims of a second gunman surfaced over the years. Together with the Zapatista uprising and other political killings that year, the assassination became a symbol of a deep political crisis in Mexico. The case was revisited officially and publicly in later years.
