OKLAHOMA CITY — 1995 · Major Tragedy
Oklahoma City Bombing
At 9:02 a.m. on 19 April 1995 a bomb in a rented truck parked outside the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building in downtown Oklahoma City exploded. It killed 168 people, including 19 children, most of them in the building's day-care centre; hundreds were injured and more than 300 nearby buildings were damaged. The FBI's largest investigation to date led to Gulf War veteran Timothy McVeigh and his accomplices. McVeigh was convicted in 1997 and executed on 11 June 2001; Terry Nichols received life imprisonment, and Michael Fortier was convicted for failing to report the plot. It remains the deadliest act of homegrown terrorism in U.S. history.
