SolvedSources: ALast updated: 14 October 2026

Fatma Şengül, a mother of three, was shot dead outside her home in Gülensu, Maltepe, on the morning of 30 March 2019 while leaving for work, by a man who worked at the same place. On 19 December 2019 the first-instance court imposed a life sentence but reduced it to 18 years by applying an "unjust provocation" reduction. The ruling drew protests from women's organisations. On appeal the reduction was removed and the sentence became life imprisonment. A place in Maltepe was named after Şengül.
