Kailash: The Unclimbed Sacred Mountain

Folklore — not a documented case

Mount Kailash, sacred to four religions, has never been climbed, and those who try to conquer it are said to meet supernatural obstacles.

Mount Kailash, in the Ngari region of western Tibet, rises to about 6,638 metres and is striking for its symmetrical, pyramid-like shape. The mountain is sacred to four faiths: Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism and Bon, Tibet's indigenous religion. In Hinduism it is the abode of Shiva; in Buddhism it is seen as the earthly counterpart of Mount Meru, the centre of the universe.
