Antigua Guatemala, Guatemala (folk tale)

El Sombrerón

Folklore — not a documented case

In the streets of Guatemala's old capital, Antigua, a mysterious man with an enormous black hat and a guitar is said to serenade at night and braid horses' manes.

Antigua Guatemala, Guatemala's colonial-era capital, is known for its cobbled streets and baroque churches. Its most famous night visitor, however, is El Sombrerón. According to the tales, he is a short man wearing an enormous black hat that shades almost his whole body, dressed in clothes with silver buttons. He carries a guitar and drives mules laden with charcoal.
