The Stanley Hotel and Room 217

Folklore — not a documented case

At the historic Stanley Hotel in the Rocky Mountains, the spirit of a chambermaid who survived a 1911 explosion is said to still tidy Room 217.

At the foot of Colorado's Rocky Mountains, overlooking the town of Estes Park, the white Stanley Hotel opened on 4 July 1909. It was built by Freelan Oscar Stanley, the inventor known for his steam-powered automobile, who had come to the clean mountain air to recover from tuberculosis and wanted to turn the area into a resort for wealthy visitors seeking health.
