Edinburgh, Scotland — Greyfriars Kirkyard (urban legend)

The Mackenzie Poltergeist

Folklore — not a documented case

In Edinburgh's historic graveyard, visitors are said to have reported strange experiences after a 17th-century mausoleum was disturbed in the late 1990s. Nothing has been proven; the tale spread largely through ghost tours.

Greyfriars Kirkyard sits in the heart of Edinburgh's Old Town and has been used as a burial ground since the 16th century. It holds the domed tomb of Sir George Mackenzie, a Scottish lawyer who died in 1691 and is remembered for his harsh prosecutions, known locally as the “Black Mausoleum”. Right next to it is the walled area called the “Covenanters' Prison”, where hundreds of Covenanter prisoners were held in the open through the winter after the defeat at Bothwell Bridge in 1679.
