Dublin, Ireland — Montpelier Hill (folk tale)

The Hellfire Club of Montpelier Hill

Folklore — not a documented case

An 18th-century hunting lodge said to have been built with stones from an ancient burial cairn is remembered as a meeting place of the “Hellfire Club”; tales of a giant black cat and the Devil are tied to it.

On the summit of Montpelier Hill, south of Dublin, stands a ruined stone building. It was built around 1725 as a hunting lodge by William Conolly, Speaker of the Irish House of Commons. Tradition holds that stones from a Neolithic burial cairn on the hill were used in its construction.
