Wexford, Ireland — Hook Peninsula (folk tale)

Loftus Hall and the Card-Playing Stranger

Folklore — not a documented case

A stranger who sheltered at the manor on a stormy night is said to have vanished through the roof when, during a card game, the household noticed he had cloven hooves.

Loftus Hall is a large mansion standing on a lonely, windswept coast on the Hook Peninsula in south-east Ireland. Although the present building was rebuilt in the late 19th century, the site's history goes back to the Middle Ages, and it is often called “the most haunted house in Ireland”.
