The Sennichi Department Store Fire — The Seventh-Floor Cabaret

ClosedSources: ALast updated: 14 October 2026

On the night of 13 May 1972 a fire broke out in a clothing section under renovation on the third floor of the Sennichi Department Store building in Osaka's Namba district. Smoke spread rapidly to the upper floors through lift shafts, air ducts and stairwells. Guests and staff of the Playtown cabaret on the seventh floor were never warned; locked exits, failed fire shutters and the absence of sprinklers left them with no way out. All of the dead had been in the cabaret, and at least 118 people were killed. Japan's deadliest department store fire, it led—together with the 1973 Taiyo store fire—to revised building and fire codes. The exact cause was never established; three people received suspended sentences in the negligence case.
