Hipercor Bombing

SolvedSources: ALast updated: 14 October 2026

At 16:12 on 19 June 1987, a bomb planted by the Basque separatist group ETA exploded in a car parked in the underground car park of the Hipercor shopping centre in Barcelona. Fuel added to the explosive caused a fire and toxic smoke that spread through the building; 21 people were killed and 45 injured. Three warning calls had been made beforehand, but because bomb threats were considered routine the store was not evacuated, and a police search found nothing. As ETA's deadliest attack on civilians, it provoked a backlash even among the group's support base. The two militants who carried it out were sentenced in 1989, and a member who took part and the member who ordered it were sentenced in 2003, to prison terms of hundreds of years.
