MELBOURNE — 1987 · Murder
The Queen Street Massacre
On 8 December 1987 a 22-year-old gunman entered the Australia Post building at 191 Queen Street in central Melbourne on the pretext of visiting a friend and opened fire at random on office workers. Eight people were killed and five injured. Some workers tackled him and wrestled the weapon away; he then fell to his death from an 11th-floor window. It came just four months after the Hoddle Street massacre a few kilometres away. The two massacres accelerated debate in Australia over tightening gun-control laws.
