Cumbria Shootings

ClosedSources: ALast updated: 14 October 2026

On 2 June 2010 on the west coast of Cumbria, a 52-year-old taxi driver shot dead his twin brother in Lamplugh in the morning and then the family solicitor in Frizington. He then drove through Whitehaven, Egremont, Gosforth and Seascale, shooting at random. Twelve people were killed and 11 injured. As police mounted a large manhunt, the gunman abandoned his car in the village of Boot and took his own life in woodland. Ranked with Hungerford and Dunblane among the worst firearms crimes in British history, the attack reopened debate on the control of licensed guns.
