POLOHY — 2005 · Serial Murder
Serial Murders by a Former Police Investigator
Between 1980 and 2005, dozens of victims, mostly young girls and women, were killed in Ukraine's Dnipropetrovsk, Kharkiv and Zaporizhzhia regions and in Crimea. The killer was Serhiy Tkach, a former police investigator whose knowledge of investigative methods allowed him to avoid detection for more than twenty years. During that time several innocent people were wrongly convicted of some of his crimes. He was arrested at his home in Polohy in August 2005. After a year-long trial he was sentenced in December 2008 to life imprisonment for 29 murders; the death penalty had been abolished in Ukraine. He died in prison in 2018.
