The "Mosgaz" Case

SolvedSources: ALast updated: 14 October 2026

Between December 1963 and January 1964, over roughly three weeks, five people were killed in Moscow and Ivanovo. The killer gained entry to homes by posing as a worker from Mosgaz, the city's gas utility, which is how the press and public came to call him "Mosgaz". The victims included children and an elderly woman; one person survived an attack. The killings caused widespread fear in Moscow. The perpetrator was arrested at Kazansky railway station on 12 January 1964, sentenced to death after a two-week trial and shot at Butyrka Prison at the end of January 1964. His girlfriend, who helped him, was also jailed. The case is known as one of the first serial murder cases officially acknowledged in the Soviet Union.
