MUNICH — 1990 · Murder
Murder of Walter Sedlmayr
Walter Sedlmayr, one of Bavaria's best-loved stage and television actors, was found murdered in the bedroom of his Munich apartment on 14 July 1990. The investigation initially looked in other directions and the case fuelled long press speculation. Eventually two half-brothers who had business ties to the actor were tried; on 21 May 1993 a Munich court sentenced both to life imprisonment for murder. They were released on parole in 2007 and 2008. The case later became a landmark 'right to be forgotten' dispute when the convicted men sought to have their names removed from archives; in 2018 the European Court of Human Rights ruled in favour of preserving press archives.
