Death of Dilek Doğan

ClosedSources: ALast updated: 14 October 2026

On 18 October 2015, during a night-time house search by police in Küçükarmutlu, Sarıyer, Istanbul, 23-year-old Dilek Doğan, who was at home, was wounded by a bullet fired from a police officer's gun. Taken to hospital, she died seven days later. The incident raised questions about proportionate use of force in house searches. At the end of the trial the officer who fired was sentenced to prison for negligent homicide. Saying that both the sentence and the time actually served were disproportionate to the gravity of the incident, the family applied to the European Court of Human Rights in 2021. Doğan's death became one of the most frequently cited cases in campaigns against police violence.
