The Danghara Attack on Cyclists

ClosedSources: ALast updated: 14 October 2026

On 29 July 2018, in Danghara district about 100 kilometres south of Tajikistan's capital Dushanbe, a car deliberately drove into seven foreign cyclists on round-the-world tours, and its occupants then continued the attack. Four tourists died, two Americans, one Dutch and one Swiss, and the others were injured. Four of the attackers were killed the next day in clashes with security forces and the fifth was arrested. The Islamic State claimed the attack and released a video, while the Tajik government blamed the banned Islamic Renaissance Party, which denied the accusation. The captured defendant was sentenced to life in prison. The attack cast a shadow over adventure tourism on the Pamir Highway.
