Crash of LAM Flight 470

ClosedSources: ALast updated: 14 October 2026

On 29 November 2013 LAM Mozambique Airlines Flight 470, an Embraer 190 flying from Maputo to Luanda, descended rapidly from cruising altitude midway through the flight and crashed into marshland in Namibia's Bwabwata National Park. All 27 passengers and 6 crew died. Heavy rain was falling in the area and early assessments focused on the weather. But preliminary findings released in December 2013 by Mozambique's Civil Aviation Institute showed that the captain had locked the cockpit door when the co-pilot left, ignored alarms and changed the autopilot settings, deliberately bringing the plane down. The case is often cited in discussions of crashes caused by pilots' intentional acts.
