KISH ISLAND — 2007 · Missing Person
Disappearance of Robert Levinson
Retired FBI agent Robert Levinson vanished in March 2007 during a trip to Kish Island in Iran's Persian Gulf. It later emerged that CIA analysts had sent him on an intelligence-gathering mission without authority to do so. In 2010 his family received a video showing him weakened, and in 2011 photos of him in captivity; Iran maintained it had no information about him. He became the longest-held American hostage in US history. In March 2020 his family said information from US officials led them to believe he had died in Iranian custody. When and how he died remains unknown.
