PILAR — 2002 · Suspicious Death
The María Marta García Belsunce Case
Sociologist María Marta García Belsunce was found dead on 27 October 2002 in her home in the Carmel gated community in Pilar, apparently having struck her head in the bathtub, and the death was initially recorded as a domestic accident. An autopsy carried out amid suspicion revealed on 2 December 2002 that she had five bullet wounds to the head. The cleaning of the scene and the discarding of a bullet found there deeply affected the investigation. Her husband was convicted in 2009 but acquitted in 2016. The investigation then turned to another suspect, and a first-instance conviction was handed down in 2024; the process of making it final is ongoing. It is one of Argentina's longest and most controversial murder cases.
